Plitvice Lakes

After an early morning wake up call in Zadar April and I headed to the bus station and got the first bus to plitvice lakes.

I know I have said that I am over waterfalls since nothing really compares to Victoria Falls or Iguazu but I thought that Plitvice looked awesome and were worth the trip, plus they are a highlight of Croatia, so I kind of had to!

The bus ride took a little over 2 hours and although the day started clear and beautiful the closer we got to Plitvice the worst the weather got. Why does it has to rain on the day we decide to walk around lakes and waterfalls? I was really hoping for the rain to stop as soon as we got to Plitvice… but that didn’t happen!

We got off the bus and headed to the info office to figure out where to leave our bags. Luckily, the park offers free luggage storage so we dropped our bags off, got our tickets, and started to explore the famous Plitvice.

As always I am VERY resourceful and before going to Plitvice I found a brochure from a tour that gave a description of the perfect route to see the lakes in the time we had. The lakes can be done in a couple of hours or in a couple of days depending on how much one wants to see (and walk.) We only wanted to spend the day, arrive at 11am and leave in the 4pm bus to Zagreb so I was ecstatic to have found a route that would take us through the most see parts of the park, including the upper and lower lakes.

Our walk started walking up hill and while looking down we got the great view of the lower lakes.

The entrance to the lakes included the electric ferry and the scenic train so we walked to the first station and got the “Scenic train” that wasn’t very scenic, nor a train! So confusing!

Once at Station 3, our last stop, we walked along the path following the letter that one of the people working there told us to follow.

The views were pretty nice, the water at times was crystal clean, and we had great fun walking the paths and admiring the view. At times April and I wondered what would happen if it rained a little more and the water was higher than the path (because it was pretty darn close!)

April strolling through the rain!

After walking the upper lakes for a while we ended up at the electric ferry station where we got on the ferry and headed towards the lower lakes.

Our visit to Plitvice ended with the grand finale of the big waterfall! By then it had almost stopped raining and we were able to get a clear view of the waterfall.

Although our visit was a little rainy I thought it was really beautiful and worth the stop.

Now, off to Zagreb and catching the next bus to Lubjana, Slovenia!!!
