Melaka, Malaysia!

I left Singapore by bus and crossed the border to Malaysia. The border crossing was super easy and the queue took less than 5 minutes in each border. I had heard some horror stories of people spending hours trying to cross and even busses leaving people behind but my crossing was effortless and super quick.

After about 4 hours I finally reached the central station in Melaka, changed to a local and walked about 10 minutes to my hostel… Ringo’s guesthouse, which by the way was awesome!!!

Melaka is a UNESCO heritage site and it’s full of charm. The city center is all painted in Red and  I found it to be cute. One funny thing about Melaka are the decorated bikes for tourists! They all have Disney/ Tv characters stuffed animals as decorations, lights and loud music! It was super funny!

On the weekends Melaka has a street market full of stalls with food and trinkets to buy. I enjoyed eating green mango but my favorite was a coconut that had been stripped out of its shell and given to me in a bowl with a straw… yum!

I got to visit the only original village left in Melaka, Kg Morten, which is now surrounded by big hotels and corporate buildings. One afternoon I went at 4 pm for a free walking tour around the village and got to visit Villa Sentosa, one of the original houses that is now a living museum.

We strolled around the little town and got to see how people live there. The tour took us to one of the neighbors who makes little replica houses and traditionally people display these little doll houses in their patio.

I really just spent my days in Melaka walking around town, strolling near the river, and eating indian food.

What a contrast! on the left tin houses, on the right tourist attraction.

Sangkaya, AMAZING coconut ice cream!

I also visited a Chinese Temple and saw the town's mosque... I think I am tired of temples!

On my last night the owner of the hostel said he would take us on a night bike tour of Melaka. At first I didn’t want to go because I had just had an Indian dinner and it was 9pm already but at the end the whole hostel ended up going and I was peer pressured!
The ride was beautiful and I was so glad I got to do it! We biked all around the river and then Howard, the owner, asked us to park our bikes and go to the top of the hotel to get a view of Melaka.
