I'm in Sydney! Part 1

Oh Sydney! So sad that this is my last stop in Australia but once again I'm really excited for what this city has to offer!

On the flight from Cairns I sat in a window seat and was able to see Sydney from the window...

Got there in the afternoon so of course I just left my bags in the hostel and went out to explore the city.

My hostel was on Pitt street and I followed it down to the water, I passed the main shopping are and while I was walking down I was able to see a little piece of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and I got really excited! haha I was on the phone with my friend Simon at the time and I said "I see the bridge, I see the bridge" I bet he thought I was the silliest tourist there is!

So I finally arrived to Circular Quay, where the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House are. If you think of Sydney this is what comes to mind, this spot is so iconic and I couldn't believe I finally made it here.

I looked at my watch and it was already 5:39pm and I knew sunset would happen any time so I walked as fast as I could through the botanical garden path and arrived to the viewpoint where people had said it's the best sunset spot to see both the bridge and the Opera house!
Once I arrived there were so many people with tripods trying to catch the sunset but unfortunately there was no sunset that day but I still sat there watching Sydney get dark and illuminated!

I spent the next 6 days super busy going all over town and enjoying all the sights that Sydney has to offer.

Free walking tour

Everybody I talked to raved about the free walking tour so of course I had to give it a shot! Plus, I find that usually there are really good since the guides are working for tips.

One of our first stops was the Queen Victoria Building (or QVB since Aussies love to give everything a short name) now a big and fancy looking shopping mall.

This totally reminded me of Melbourne and its beautiful shops!

The ceiling was just fabulous:

We walked by Hyde Park and our guide gave us a lot of good information about Sydney and its history... but I can't remember most of it!

Sydney is trying to be a little more artsy, probably like Melbourne, and this is a cool display of cages called "Forgotten Song." There are speakers that make the sounds of fifty birds that once lived in central Sydney. I was there for just a little bit but the songs change depending on the time of day, at the end of the day the sound of nocturnal birds can be heard... Loved the idea!

 Coogee to Bondi Beach

I did an amazing walk from Coogee Beach all the way to Bondi beach with my friends Sharon and Con. The walk took over 2 hours and the view were simply amazing!
Apparently the day that we went was kind of their first good sunny day after the winter so there was a lot of people around, although they said that it is nothing compared to summer, where the beaches are so packed you can't even find a spot on the sand to lay on!

Coogee

The coolest part of the walk was walking through a graveyard that overlooked the ocean! I've never seen such thing before!

I really enjoyed watching the surfers, there were so many of them and it was a lot of fun to see them try to catch a wave. It looked really hard and I was just thinking what a risky sport that is! The water there is well known for having sharks and from what I saw a lot of rocks too so these surfers must know the beaches around here pretty well in order not to get hurt.
Posted in every beach is a surfers code:

Finally made it to Bondi Beach!

And then had a bite to eat at a restaurant in Bondi Beach...

The decor was super funny, they had a rappers mural

the food was super bad but super good! haha Grilled cheese ball?!?! Yes, please :)

How about a CoNut? No, not really.. too full! but I'll take a picture!

With Sharon and Con
Darling Harbour
Ok, maybe it was my expectation of Darling Harbour that made me not to like it. I was thinking of a fun Pier 39 kind of harbour but it was nothing like that! The harbour has nothing but restaurants and 3 museums. No fun shops, no merry-go-round, no stands to it. I really didn't think it was worth seeing other than saturday night at 8:30 for their 4-minute firework show.

Manly Beach
In order to get to Manly one needs to take the ferry from Circular Quay. Well, on sunday there is maximum fare of AU$2.50 for all day with the Opal card (apparently that's the way of encouraging families to go out on sundays) so I took advantage of it and went to Manly.

To be honest there is nothing special in Manly, for me it was another beach but the ferry ride was well worth the $2.50! You get a really nice view of Sydney from the water.

Sydney Opera House
So while I was there they were doing the musical of My Fair Lady but the tickets were too expensive. On sunday after Manly I went to the box office just to see if they had anything cheap and all the tickets left started at $280 or so and I didn't want to spend that much so I said no. I kept talking to the lady at the ticket office for a while and I asked her to check again and one seat had become available for $170. My mentality is "You are here now, you never know when you will be back" and the price wasn't all that bad so I decided to go for it and enjoy a nice show in the Sydney Opera house!

I went in like an hour before the show to make sure I had enough time to walk around and enjoy being inside the opera house. I took a bunch of pictures and then took my seat, 10 minutes before the show started a guy came and said he had the same seat number as me. Quickly I said that I would go downstairs to take care of it. I ended up seating closer to the stage so it even better than I thought!

The view after the show:

Night Ferry
So since Sunday is so cheap to travel I really took advantage of it and took the last ferry to the zoo and back (without getting off) just to enjoy the view of Sydney at night!
